Laia are a Portuguese post-rock band which have recently launched their first album: Viva Jesus e Mais AlguĂ©m. They picked up some of the best things about traditional Portuguese music, like the Portuguese guitar (the most important musical instrument on Fado) or the Adufe, mixed it with some electric guitars and smooth voices and created some really great songs, which I think even those who don’t understand Portuguese will love.
Last night I saw them perform a small showcase on a music store, to an audience composed not only of young music fans, but also of some families and older people who got curious once they saw the traditional portuguese instruments on stage, and in the end everyone was surprisingly pleased. Even me, who’s been devouring their album these past few weeks and already know some of their songs by heart.
The video is a great homage to our capital city Lisbon, and some of it’s most beautiful places which, as they say in an interview, might be degraded and neglected these days, but are still beautiful. And it’s also full of little details about Portuguese culture. In fact, it kinda makes me feel bad for writing this post in English, but I decided that I would keep this blog in this language only, and writing about Portuguese bands in English is also a way to get some of our local bands out there, which they truly deserve.
